We even get a featuring role for Blake Anderson (from Workaholics) as the tech-head weed smoking, pill-popping white boy Will, who helps the gang out in their crazy adventure. ![]() The geeked-out, early 90s culture-obsessed trio of our unlikely hero Malcolm (played by Shameik Moore), awkward “14 percent African” Jib (Tony Revolori), and ballsy lez Diggy (Kiersey Simmons) are best friends and high school losers who do a whole lot of growing up when accidentally getting involved in a drug deal involving street corner gangsta Dom (the smooth-as-ever A$AP Rocky in his movie debut) in where else but Inglewood, California. ![]() Anyone who takes over ownership of a sector banks some points, and anyone who goes through subsequently without beating the target time gets nothing. Each track is split into four sectors, and the person who goes through one the fastest "owns it" until someone beats the time for that sector. Drag racing is a good way to make the most of your tuning, but it's pretty tedious in general. It gets more difficult, and if you invest yourself enormously in tuning your car then it's possible to derive real satisfaction from reducing your best times by fractions of a second, which is of course the game's intention, but it's too much hard and repetitive work to get to that point, and my enthusiasm dwindled long beforehand. So in effect, it's pressing two buttons when prompted, then pressing two buttons when prompted, and then doing two more rounds of it. They're basically the 10-second-race thing from The Fast And The Furious (which most of the dev team can probably quote verbatim), and involve warming up your tyres by doing wheelspin with the right trigger (trying to hold a cursor in a green bit on a grip bar as much as possible), and then doing the actual race. There are also Drift races, where you throw the back of the car out for as long as possible to gather points. There are standard multi-car races, which are what they are, and Time Trials, where you're racing around the same track as the others but spread out, a bit like Formula One qualifying sessions. ![]() It's not very exciting, but there's lots of it to do, with several events in each of the many Race Days and Showdowns you attend. She switched her major, not to music, but to computer science, "a good way to save money for the music," she told Liu. But I realized music was another way to achieve the same effect." Teng began performing in her Stanford dorm, which had a piano, and friends encouraged her to get serious about music, distributing mp3 copies of her songs around campus. I really love affecting people in a deep and personal way. "I realized that I was not meant to be a doctor," she told Liu. That decision brought Teng to a crisis point. After graduating from high school and enrolling at Stanford, however, she decided on a pre-med program. She also began writing popular songs at age 10, and two songs she wrote while a student at Saratoga High School later showed up on her debut album, Waking Hour. Teng was a talented pianist, and for a while she dreamed of a concert career. Her parents "didn't force it on me at all, and they never scolded me into practicing," she told Marian Liu of the San Jose Mercury News. Many Chinese-American parents in California require piano studies of their children, but Teng asked for them on her own after trying out pianos at the houses of family friends. Piano lessons also helped push Teng in the direction of a musical career. "It was a tradition that was taken with the poetry of words and with the idea that lyrics should say something." "It was sophisticated stuff-'You read your Emily Dickinson and I, my Robert Frost,'-that's not simple English," Teng recalled to Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle. She got some early exposure to the art of the singer-songwriter when her parents started listening to records by Carole King, James Taylor, and Simon & Garfunkel in order to improve their English skills. Teng's parents, natives of Taiwan, came to California to work in the San Francisco Bay Area's technology industry.
